The Bell Witch claimed to be the spirit of Kate Batts. She was a mean, old neighbor of John Bell who believed that she was cheated by him in a land purchase. Upon her deathbed, she swore that she would haunt John and his descendants. Human interactions with the Bell Witch go as far back as 1817, even catching the attention of then General (future president) Andrew Jackson who has said "I had rather face the entire British army than spend another night with the Bell Witch." There are many tales of the haunting of The Bell Witch, and she is one of the most famous supernatural stories in America.
