Syrinx was a nymph in Greek mythology, who admired and followed the goddess Artemis. The god Pan became enamored with her, trying to seduce her, but Syrinx ran from him. Coming to the water's edge, Syrinx asked the river nymphs to help her. In some tales she was transformed into a lilac bush, in others she was transformed into reeds. Pan, distraught that he was unable to find Syrinx, took the reeds from the river, cut them to the appropriate length, and made his Pan pipes name Syrinx ever since.
